Q: What is the “Riley Nelson Rule?”
A: If an athlete signs a National Letter of Intent and enrolls at a school, NCAA rules prohibit another school from contacting the athlete in the mission field without the original school’s permission (13.1.1.3.2.1).
Q: Is there a limit to how many scholarship athletes a school can sign to NLIs?
A: Yes. A school can accept a maximum of 25 National Letters of Intent per signing period (15.5.1.10.1) and is allowed a maximum of 25 new scholarship athletes per academic year (15.5.6.1).
Q: Can an athlete on scholarship for another sport join the football team and not count against the scholarship limit?
A: No. A participant in football and any other sport will be counted against the football scholarship total (15.5.10.1).
