Chalk Talk: BYU vs. Utah State
- Updated: October 8, 2014
3rd Quarter
Utah State ran another counter play here. Rowley and Fua did a great job containing and forcing Vigil back inside. Unfortunately, Stout missed a tackle in the backfield and Vigil was able to sneak through for 5 yards.
On this play, BYU ran a play which has plagued our own defense this season. When the corners are playing 10 yards off of the receiver, the two best things you can do are deep outs, and deep comebacks. Mitch Mathews ran a deep out and Christian Stewart made an easy completion to help himself get settled into the game.
Robert Anae did a great job getting Stewart settled in for his first offensive drive in the second half. Leslie was set up for a WR screen and K. Johnson, Koroma, Kearsley, and Wesley all pulled to the right to provide blocking. Leslie used his athleticism to make the first man miss and was off for 37 yards.
Utah State did a great job disrupting this play by bringing two men off the edge. The way BYU can counter that is by changing the read man from the unblocked DE, to the blitzing LB. At that point, it is Lasike’s job to kick out the DE and Christian can read on the LB from that point. Lasike made the correct block and Christian made the right read as the LB froze and was in position to tackle him in the backfield if he had kept it.
Rob Daniel was beat on another double move on the out-and-up route. On the second angle, you can see that he bit on the out route and had no chance once Sharp turned upfield. If Daniel didn’t have such great closing speed (even with just one shoe), this would have more than likely gone for another TD.
Fred Warner made a great read while blitzing off the edge, tackling JoJo Natson for a loss of 7 yards.
4th Quarter
It is inexcusable for a lineman to not pick up a blitz. Lapuaho failed to read the blitz during pre-snap and looked to the inside gap while the defender sprinted right past him.
