Chalk Talk: BYU vs. Utah State

2nd Quarter

After keying on Taysom on the read-option plays, the Defensive End bit on Jamaal on this play, leaving the lane wide open for Taysom en route to a 12-yard gain before the End could catch up to make the tackle.

This was the very next play. USU lined up with their D-Line shifted down a gap making it so there wasn’t a read man for Taysom. Because of this shift, Wesley was then able to kick the end man outside and move to the next level to block. The end man stayed to contain Taysom, so he gave the ball to Jamaal for a 9 yard gain.

Utah State ran a counter play here. Logan Taele’s job is to contain the RB and force him back inside, instead he was taken out by the pulling wingback. Warner also had a chance to force Vigil back inside but left his feet and Vigil was able to run for 11 yards.

On this play, Utah State ran the read-option. Rowley was left unblocked and did a great job by not committing either way, which forced Garretson to hand off the ball. The only thing he could have improved was to make a quicker burst once the ball was handed off to Rashad Hall to turn it into a run for no gain instead of a gain of 4 yards.

Jordan Johnson was beat on another double move on this TD pass to Devonte Robinson. While it is not shown on camera, it can be seen when he is highlighted that Jordan bit on the inside move which opened up the corner route for Robinson.

Preator was matched up in man-coverage on Sharp. Preator kept his eyes in the backfield for too long which proved very costly as his man would catch a 72-yard touchdown. When in man coverage, it is vital for the defensive back to keep his eyes on the man he is covering. By the time Preator looked up and began his pursuit, the receiver was already two steps past him.
