BYU fills 123-man roster with new walk-ons
- Updated: September 5, 2014
New to the Program
Dallas Doane, 6’4″, 250 lbs, OL
A 2011 graduate of Desert Ridge High School in Mesa, Arizona, Doane was signed as a preferred walk-on as part of BYU’s 2011 recruiting class. He redshirted in 2011 and was a member of the BYU Track team for the following spring season, competing in discus and shotput. He served a mission to Bacolod, Philippines, and appears to have lost about 40 pounds. He is the eighth of eight offensive tackles on the roster and will be able to gain some weight this season as a member of the scout team.
Haden Heath, 6’5″, 228 lbs, TE
Heath had an academic scholarship and preferred walk-on offer to play for the University of Utah upon graduation from Viewmont High School in 2012. He deferred his enrollment to serve a mission in Suva, Fiji and apparently decided to attend BYU post-mission instead. As a Senior at Viewmont, Haden earned 5A All-State Honorable Mention honors while catching a school-record 47 passes for 577 yards and 7 touchdowns.
Jared Kapisi, 6’1″, 185 lbs, WR
Jared graduated this spring from Maui (HI) High School, where he played football, soccer, and was a member of the track team, competing in the 400m, high jump, and pole vault. A superb all-around athlete, Kapisi led his team in all receiving categories and was also the team’s primary placekicker.
Brad Markham, 6’4″, 230 lbs, TE
As a Senior at Banks High School (Oregon) in 2007-08, Brad Markham had a solid plan for his football career. As detailed to Brandon Gurney, Markham planned to greyshirt one semester at BYU, serve a mission, and then return to join the BYU football team for the 2011 season as a preferred walk-on. Somewhere along the lines, those plans changed. Following his missionary service in Johannesburg, South Africa from 2009-2011, Brad attended Eastern Arizona College, where he met and married his wife Michelle. Markham has finally made it to BYU where he can fulfill his dream of playing for the Cougars. Brad’s younger brother Brock made the team by walk-on tryout in 2013 and now Brad has done the same. Brad has 2 years of eligibility remaining.
Isaac Robledo, 6’0″, 185 lbs, RB
Robledo graduated from New Braunfels (Texas) High School in 2010. He attended BYU for a year prior to serving in the Colorado Colorado Springs Mission from 2011-2013. He played wide receiver in high school and joins the team with 3 years to play 3. Isaac’s brother Jose is a winger on the BYU Rugby team.
Landon Simonsen, 6’3″, 302 lbs, OL
Landon graduated from Davis High School with BYU LB Troy Hinds in 2011. He earned 5A All-State Honorable Mention as a Senior offensive lineman. He served a mission to Bangkok, Thailand from 2012-2014 and joins the team with 4 years to play 4.
