TEAM-BY-TEAM PROFILES: MAUI INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT
The EA Sports Maui Invitational Tournament has been running since 1984 and is played at the Lahaina Civic Center (cap. 2,400) on the Maui island. It is televised by ESPN and hosted by Chaminade University (Honolulu). Chaminade plays in the tournament each year along with seven traditionally strong Division I programs, making Maui the widely-regarded best in early-season college tournaments.
BYU will be making its third appearance at the Maui Invitational. In 1992, BYU reached the finals against Duke, where the Cougars lost by 33 points.
Participants will play three games at the tournament on Thanksgiving week (Nov. 24-26). Winners advance to play each other, losers are paired together in consolation games to ensure the three games.
The bracket has not yet been determined, so here are the teams in Maui of which BYU would face three:
ARIZONA
Nickname: Wildcats
Conference: Pac 12
2013-14 record: 33-5, advanced to Elite Eight, lost to Wisconsin by 1 in OT. Spent eight consecutive weeks as AP #1.
NCAA Tournament: 31 appearances (51-30), 4 Final Fours, 1 national championship.
All-time vs. BYU: 19-19
CHAMINADE
Nickname: Silverswords
Pronounced SHAW-min-odd
Conference: Pacific West (Division II, same conference as BYU-Hawaii)
2013-14 record: 19-13
All-time vs BYU: 0-1
Last year’s Maui Invitational: Went 0-3 to Baylor, Gonzaga, and Minnesota by an average score of 96-75.
KANSAS STATE
Nickname: Wildcats
Conference: Big 12
2013-14 record: 20-13, lost in first round to national runner-up Kentucky
NCAA Tournament: 28 appearances (33-32), 4 Final Fours
All-time vs BYU: 4-3
MISSOURI
Nickname: Tigers
Conference: SEC
2013-14 record: 23-12, lost to Southern Miss in NIT 2nd round
NCAA Tournament: 26 appearances (22-26)
All-time vs BYU: Zero previous meetings. Hard to believe the Lilburn W. Boggs Bowl has only been played a grand total of once between football and basketball. That lone meeting resulted in a direct descendant of Brigham Young quarterbacking and receiving the Cougars past Mizzou.
PITTSBURGH
Nickname: Panthers
Conference: ACC
2013-14 record: 26-10, lost in second round to 1-seed Florida
NCAA Tournament: 25 appearances (24-26), 1 Final Four
All-time vs BYU: 0-1
PURDUE
Nickname: Boilermakers
Conference: Big Ten
2013-14 record: 15-17
NCAA Tournament: 26 appearances (35-26), 2 Final Fours
All-time vs BYU: 0-1
SAN DIEGO STATE
Nickname: Aztecs
Conference: Mountain West
2013-14 record: 31-5, lost in Sweet 16 to 1-seed Arizona
NCAA Tournament: 10 appearances (5-10)
All-time vs BYU: 23-48

Hilariously sly with using the Pac 12 symbol instead of the Utah symbol. Funny stuff. Good write up.
